Diagonal Avenue is the most important Avenue in the city…it’s the “strip”…so to speak. Bars, nightclubs, discotheques and restaurants are all around this area making it one of the most visited by far. Here’s how the area breaks down:
Santalo Street and in the vicinity of Placa Francesca Macia is the area where you can find some of the more high-class selection of nightclubs and bars. Near Pau Clarins Street and Aribau Street you can hear the drums going, and offers a variety of options that really caters to all different tastes. The Gracia district has lots of small night spots and outdoor cafes. The Olympic Village has a nice selection of bars and discotheques.
There are also a bunch of actual events in the party-world of Barcelona that you should note for sure! On June 23rd there are lots of fireworks, bonfires and firecrackers, people from Barcelona celebrate the beginning of Summer with a HUGE party…SO FUN! You can enjoy a whole week of these festivities called “Eve of Saint Johns” where people eat a popular pastry called “coca de St Joan.” On September 24th you can enjoy a whole week of celebrations…check it out…they celebrate their patron saint and the festivity is called La Merce. There are fire-breathing dragons that dance around and there are musical shows with tons of lights…just a brilliant sight! On April 23rd they celebrate Saint Georges day where people offer a rose and a book…basically a big book fair all over the main streets of Barcelona…perfect for any book lover. Every Sunday, you will be able to watch a dance called La Sardana, which takes place outside the cathedral where people gather to celebrate.
If the night-life and dancing isn’t quite your style, there are all kinds of museums and exhibits that you can enjoy as well. There is the Gaudi-Casa Museum…a beautiful pink like Alice in Wonderland house is where Gaudi lived from 1906 to 1925. If art is your shtick, you can visit
The Picasso Museum, which likely needs no introduction. But did you know he lived in Barcelona during his formative years in which time he left fantastic work, such as the famous cubist variation of Velazquez´s Ladies in Waiting? Another extraordinary place, the only museum in Europe dedicated to Pre-Columbian Cultures, is The Barbier Mueller Museum of Columbian Art…which features Maya, Aztec, Olmec, Inca and Mochica cultures for visitors to check out.
See?? The hits keep on comin, folks…you love it!! Viva la Barcelona!!
